Animal Husbandry

Husbandry is defined by Webster as “the care of a household”, “the control or judicious use of resources”, or “the cultivation or production of plants or animals”. The first known use of this word was the 14th century and it covered all three meanings. Some synonyms of generic husbandry are frugality, economy, providence, scrimping, and thrift.

Over time, though,  it has come to usually refer to the third defintion. However, as I was reading more about husbandry, I found that if it is exclusively the third defintion being refered to, it is “animal husbandry”. Suprisingly, the first known use of this more specific distinction was in 1898.

So, in an attempt to not confuse, I will use animal husbandry for this page. I did find it intriguing that the original meaning refers to homesteading and our overall philosophy.
