In addition to our flock of chickens, we have increased our flock of pigeons to 7. We started out with 5, but within a week, we lost two (one to a rat snake). We added 4 new ones recently, including a curly brown one. They live quite happily in the same coop, walking in and around and even on the chickens. They have been a very enjoyable addition, but our reason for having them is more practical. Our goal is to raise them for food, and although none of the family has ever eaten squab, we have been told it is very good. We have a friend that raises show pigeons and not all of them turn out to be show quality. Since he can’t use these in his business, he has started giving them to us, and hopefully we can raise off enough to have a regular supply of squab for only the price of the food they eat.
