About the Cabin Floorplan

The cabin we are building was originally planned to be a 24’x16′ two story structure. Roy decided it would work better if we added a 10′ single story lean-to on the back, to house the kitchen and the bathroom. We spent hours and days pouring over ideas and different arrangements before settling on “the one”. We are still tweaking details, but we are very happy with the design. In some ways it is a very standard layout. Front door centered, walk into living room with stairway on one wall, kitchen through opening into lean-to, and bedrooms upstairs.

The bathroom though, is unlike any I’ve ever seen, born of practicality, creativity, and need for privacy for a man and four women sharing one facility. The camper has helped us see what things are a problem for us and given us ideas for how to make it work well. Our desire was to have a bathroom that all five of us could use at the same time…and we think we have it! The room itself is a 10′ x 12′ square, open to the kitchen without a door. (Bear with me here). The wall just past the kitchen is pantry shelves facing the washer and dryer on the back wall. The sink is also against the back wall out in the open, while the tub (with a little dressing room) and the toilet are each in a separate “room” with locking doors. There is also a door to the outside, making this a bathroom, laundry room, and mud room all in one.
