From Tree to Window Sill

I joked in an earlier post about having a close relationship with wood, but seriously, every time we work on the house, I am amazed at what we have accomplished. I am continually in awe of  how we have taken trees growing right here around us and turned them into a house. It isn’t really a complicated or difficult process, just a long one that requires the right equipment, hard work, and patience. It is thoroughly enjoyable to me, and our oldest daughter agrees (the other two, not so much) –  with the sawmill being our favorite step. Here is what the whole process looks like.

Once the tree is on the ground, clean up and cut it to lengths.
Next, load the logs.
Haul them all to the sawmill.
Load a log on the sawmill.
Clean any dirt off so the saw blade won't dull.
Saw the log into the size lumber we need.
Stack it and stick it to dry (patience).
After it's dry, haul it to the house, stack it, and select the board you need.
Cut the board to length.
Rip it to the right width.
Run it through the planer to get it smooth.
Nail it in the window.
