Chicken Coop Update

End where run will be added

We have finished up the construction on the coop itself. All the windows and doors are in and all the siding is up. The only real cost besides our labor was the tin for the roof at $140. We did purchase the window material, a clear pvc roofing material, which cost about $18 a sheet. We bought 2 sheets which was enough for the clerestories and windows. This brought our costs to less than $180.

We had a box of old hinges that Roy bought years ago at a yardsale (we used the last of them on this) and all the wood was ours.  We are going to stain the outside of the coop to better preserve the wood (and make it pretty!) with red paint that we had already purchased in bulk at a salvage store. It is nice when practicality (which pleases Roy) and ascetics (which pleases Susan and the girls) are compatible.

The doors were merely cut out after the siding was up, so they were free and a perfect fit.

Roosts

Roy has put in the roosts and one row of nest boxes. We have to add the run and then we’ll be finished. The coop will hold about 25 chickens and we expect to get our flock in the next few weeks so we can put our design to the test.
